Bethany Howlett, MD, MHS is an Associate Professor in the University of Wisconsin (UW) Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH). Prior to her career in medicine, she worked in the field of humanitarian assistance and international health, overseeing programs in South Sudan, Jordan, Iraq, West Bank, and Syria. Her personal and professional values continue to prioritize health equity and social justice. She is involved in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Diversity and Inclusion Advocate program where she serves as an educator and resource for employees in the DFMCH.

Her academic research seeks to identify and mitigate barriers to health services for persons experiencing homelessness. She is engaged in interprofessional health education, frequently mentoring students, residents, and peers in clinical and community settings. Her clinical practice consists of full scope family medicine with maternity and newborn care. She is currently the director of the SMPH Community Health Engagement Project program, a required curriculum for all medical students during their primary care clinical rotation. She is also a Chosei Zen priest and HEAL/ZL instructor with IZL.
